A 1949 Austin K4 Lorry, Registration No. KGU 636, finished in yellow and black. First Registered on the 21/06/1949, 3,995 cc., Chassis No. 131229, 8,333 kg. gross weight.
She was acquired by the family on the 23/02/1995 (a copy of the purchase invoice is available). She was originally a tanker finished in grey and black and was owned by various oil companies, subsequently belonging to the South Devon Electric Generating Board in the late 1950's - 1960's. The doors are sign-written and a roof-top attaching banner type sign is present but not currently installed. The conversion from tanker to flatbed has been very ably and sympathetically carried out and it is evident that high quality hardwood has been used to provide the remarkably correct period appearance. Drop sides have not been constructed, but various steel hardware for their attachment is present including four slot-in pillars and hinge plates. The Information Folder includes the V5C registration document, a Brown log book showing that the Lorry was originally a Tanker in grey and black and a Plating Certificate showing Axle 1 - 2.2 tons, Axle 2 - 6.0 tons and a Handbook for Austin 5 ton Commercial Vehicle (no. 1988 D). During the family's relocation from Surrey to Herefordshire in 1999 the decision was made to drive the lorry for the move and, needless to say, she completed the trip successfully and safely, the powerful, smooth running overhead valve six-cylinder engine bringing her home. She has since provided Stirling service fetching in the hay from the fields on the family's working farm. A new heavy-duty 12 volt battery is fitted.
