I make most of my living writing about new cars, but my heart truly belongs to the old ones. And that’s why I’m telling you all about my car, my 1947 Cadillac Series 61 Sedanette.

Enthusiasts often have an era they prefer, and for me, it’s the 1940s — I also own a 1949 Studebaker pickup truck.

American automakers switched their factories to making military supplies during the Second World War, and made their last civilian cars for 1942. They had a “gentleman’s agreement” not to work on new styling during the shutdown, and so when vehicle production restarted with the new 1946 cars, they were just the old models with some design changes.

That puts cars like mine almost into limbo. Collectors tend to either want pre-war cars that are 1942 or older; or the 1950s cars that had big fins. But if you check out the video, you’ll see why there’s so much to love about these “models in the middle.” Have a look!
