On various occasions SPB termed Rafi as the 'ultimate' playback singer. He mentioned/sang 5 Rafi songs. Here we have those 5 songs.
SPB on Rafi:
Interviewer: Sir, ....whatever be the song, we seem
to find [hesitates...] every now and then, in your singing, a tinge of
your favorite singer, Sri Rafi...
SPB [cuts in]: 100% ... you don't have to hesitate to
say it. Even in the song I just sang ... "taa ri taa
naa...naa"...That softness, sweetness, all that ... I have never heard a(nother) singer as great (as Rafi) so far. As far as film singing is concerned, amongst
playback singers, he is the ultimate, is my opinion. We also have
Kishore gaaru, Manna Dey gaaru ... they are also all versatile
singers. But in Rafi's throat (voice) there is an indescribable
sweetness that caressess us softly, strokes us, gently relaxes,
pacifies us... [in English] moreover, you can feel him smiling, you
can see ... [in Telugu] One can observe every expression in front of
one's eyes even without actually seeing the movie, this is what Rafi
has done. All this has deeply, deeply ingrained itself in me.
The curious thing is that his voice suffers from many limitations.
The lower frequency side is very limited in his voice. Our mid-
frequency is his lowest frequency. But of course, he can sing in the
high tenor very easily. In spite of this, he has sung for all
artistes (actors). A Rajesh Khanna who wanted only Kishore Kumar, an
Amitabh Bachchan who wanted only Kishore Kumar, a Dev Anand who wanted
only Kishore Kumar, for all of these people Rafi has sung. But none
of them have expressed any dissatisfaction that a voice other than the
one they wanted (Kishore) sang for them. Of course, the music
directors who have used Rafi's voice (for these actors) also deserve
credit. [In English] No doubt about that. Example, [sings] "tere mere
sapne ab ek rang hain" ... [speaks] if this had been sung by someone
other than Rafi, how could we have enjoyed it? Kishore Kumar was also
capable of singing this same song. But how would that have sounded?
This is not a song suited to Kishore's voice. That's the reason Dada
(Burman) has selected Rafi gaaru.
Similarly, in the same film [sings] "din Dhal jaaye, HAAYE!" [speaks]
when he says that HAAYE I feel like wringing out my very life breath
and laying it down at Rafi's feet as a 'naivedyam' (literally: an
offering made to God). His ... voice used to become so absorbed into
(one with) the music, and that mike sense was so extraordinary that
his voice would fill up the entire theater. That extraordinary ...
essence of God that he had in him was firstly this wondrously tuneful
singing (and secondly) as we listen, we completely forget that this is
a (human) singer singing. Everything in front of our eyes just goes
out-of-focus, a bright beacon of light appears and we stare into it
unblinkingly, an unmitigated river of tears flowing unchecked from our
eyes, and it feels like God himself is standing in front of us. This is the ultimate that a
singer can achieve ... this is a great aspect of Rafi's ... [in
English] and he has influenced me a lot. [Telugu] I am merely one
amongst the throngs of people who sing Rafi's praises, standing in the
257th row at the 33rd position ... in the milling crowds of people who
have tried to sing Rafi's songs having been influenced and enthralled
by him, I am one. [In English] But he is ... he is the ultimate
[Telugu] in my view.
..............
Interviewer: Even now when you are talking about Rafi gaaru, a
minuscule layer of tears is occasionally covering your eyes and
choking itself back.
SPB: I am just trying be careful so that I don't start bawling
loudly... at home my wife never puts on Rafi's songs
because when I hear them I just race to the bathroom to weep
inconsolably... Some songs ... how [in English] how could
this man sing? [in Telugu] how can he sing so sweetly? Having created
a superb style -- noise and mischief, then sweetness, then again a
classicism. How ... [sings] kal raat zindagi se ... when I had gone to (music director) Venu for an audition, he made me listen to this song and said, "come back when
you are able to sing this mukhda (as) perfectly (as Rafi), and I'll give you an opportunity". I said, "I am not even going to try, sir. It's enough if I can even listen to this song
properly", and left it at that (because) every time I tried to sing it, somewhere or the other, I was missing something. what exceptional balance was in Rafi's singing! Actually my very first audition song itself, .. I didn't sing any Telugu song... jaanewaalo zara ... Nobody can sing like him [in English] Nobody can sing. He's the only person who can sing like that.
