Ever wondered how the shipping forecast was being received out at sea ? Well, here it is onboard a ship anchored in a sheltered anchorage off the Isle of Wight,UK . On the ships bridge ,the officer of the watch tunes into BBC Radio 4 and the distinctive sound of "Sailing By" lets him know he's on time and on the right frequency. Then he has to note down the details of the weather forecast for the sea areas in which the ship might expect to journey though within the next 24 -48 hrs, in this case THAMES, DOVER, WIGHT ,PORTLAND . This information will be used by the ships Captain in deciding when to heave up the anchor and continue on passage after sheltering from the weather. This film is a tribute to all professional seafarers who continue to record the BBC Shipping Forecast in this way, 24/7 -365 days a year in order to stay safe out at sea.
