The Ghostbusters franchise is one Hollywood can’t seem to let go of. In 1984, the original Ghostbusters became the second highest-grossing movie of the year (after Beverly Hills Cop) and became something of a gateway into horror for its young fans. Five years later, the sequel, Ghostbusters 2, wasn’t nearly as successful, and the franchise was on ice for a long time. Cut forward to 2016 when Paul Feig launched an all-female reboot of the franchise that went down like a lead balloon amongst fans, despite making a decent amount of coin at the box office. In 2021, Jason Reitman, the son of the late Ivan Reitman (who was living at the time), came forward to make his own “requel,” Ghostbusters: Afterlife, that reunited the original cast, leading to a film that many think will launch a franchise all of its own. Of the four films, which are the ones that are essential, and is the much-maligned second film and 2016’s reboot all that bad?
