Amid protests over the newly-elected Chief Executive Member (CEM) Rakesh Sangma, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday was greeted with black flags and loud slogans of ‘go back’.

The chief minister was returning from Damalgre Rerapara block building and passed through the agitating protesters at Ampati in South Garo Hills.

The protesters in Garo Hills have been demanding the removal of newly-elected CEM Rakesh Sangma. They have claimed that Sangma’s identity as an indigenous Garo is doubtful and demanded his immediate removal from the post.

The Garo Hills-based NGOs comprising GSU, FKJGP, ADE, FAF, AYWO and NESO had pointed out that Rakesh always identified themselves as ‘Newar’ (of Nepali origin) and not a ‘Sangma’. They claimed he later changed it to Newar Sangma in college.

They added that it was only prior to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections that he filed an affidavit and started identifying himself as Rakesh A Sangma.
