His youthful years were thus dominated by a struggle between worldly pursuits which brought him into many types of temptations. In fact his letters vividly records the temptations and trials he endured for several years as a desert hermit. After his ordinate on by the bishop of Antioch, followed by periods of study in Constantinople and service at Rome, to Pope Damasus I, Jerome opted permanently for a solitary and ascetic life in the city of Bethlehem from the mid-380s. He had a thorough study of Hebrew language and culture from a Christian monk. Pope Damasus, commissioned him the responsibility of translation of the Bible. Jerome spent 15 years translating most of the Hebrew Bible into its authoritative Latin version.
He was a master of Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Chaldaic and was a learned Scripture scholar. He translated most of the Old Testament from Hebrew. Jerome also wrote commentaries which are a great source of scriptural inspiration for us even today. He was an avid student, a thorough scholar, a prodigious letter-writer and a consultant to monks, bishops, and pope. Saint Augustine said of him, “What Jerome is ignorant of, no mortal has ever known.”
St Jerome was a priest, monk and Doctor of the Church. He is well-known for his extraordinary depth of learning and translations of the Bible into Latin. Besides his contributions as a scholar and Church Father, he is also regarded as a patron of people with difficult personalities.
