Technical Talk 11 on “Innovating for Impact: Structural Engineering Lessons from the Field” by Marco Conti

This presentation explores the journey behind the College Hampate Ba project, showcasing how its design was crafted to align with the educational mission and benefit the local community. Drawing on broader project experience, similar works that influenced this approach will be shared, along with lessons learned throughout the process.

The project encountered unique challenges, including unreliable building material supply, complex environmental conditions, and cultural considerations, all requiring creative and adaptive solutions. The structural strategies implemented, such as sustainable practices and the use of locally sourced materials, will be discussed to illustrate how they were integrated to complement both cultural and environmental factors. Engineering challenges, including the need for resilience against natural hazards and adherence to load-bearing requirements, will be detailed alongside the innovative solutions applied to meet these demands and optimise durability and practicality.

The presentation will conclude by reflecting on the positive community impact and the recognition the project has received, affirming its significance and contribution.
