TriStar Summit Medical Center was deemed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) as a The Pathway to Excellence hospital. This designation demonstrates to our staff and our community that we recognize the value of nurses’ contributions. To earn The Pathway to Excellence® designation, ANCC requires the healthcare organization to demonstrate that it has integrated practice standards into its operating policies, procedures, and management structure. These standards focus on the workplace, a balanced lifestyle for nurses, and policies that support nurses on the job.

The Pathway to Excellence designation is a validation to potential nurses here at Summit, to nurses that are already here, to our patients and to the general public that we do what we say we do. Which is deliver high quality nursing care. This designation sets Tristar Summit Medical Center apart from other facilities in Nashville as well as throughout the United States as a culture that will support that nurse to be able to flourish to be able to come to work every day and provide the best possible care for their patients. Happy nurses make happy patients and if we enjoy our jobs that means that we enjoy interacting with our patients. That we feel good about the care we're providing. That we feel like we are an integral part of our patients positive outcomes, is really what keeps us engaged in our jobs in and keeps us working at our hospital. The pathway to excellence designation through the American Nurses Credentialing Center is not given to us. It is not given to the organization. It is a process by which you apply and then you show evidence that supports that you do have an environment that supports the pathway to excellence. The process actually took about three years. We had to submit a rather lengthy
document along with all the necessary supporting documentation that verified that we met twelve practice standards that the American Nurses credentialing corporation deemed as being essential to provide a quality work environment for nurses. After developing and submitting this documentation we had to have at least fifty one percent of our nursing staff, our RN staff complete a survey that validated that what we said in this document was true, that indeed we do have that environment and our survey results were very successful, we were delighted. The Pathway to Excellence designation allows a culture where the nurses are engaged in decision making that directly impacts their practice. We have a rather robust clinical ladder program where nurses receive financial compensation, bonuses, for doing projects that positively affect their nursing unit the hospital or the community. So nurses can count volunteer activities at church and at schools. They can write papers they can publish they can participate in interprofessional councils that affect the quality of care at their bedside and they can be compensated for this in a very concrete way. The purpose of embarking on this Pathway to Excellence
journey was to allow our professional nursing staff to deliver the very best care, empower them to deliver the very best care for the purpose of improving patient experience and patient outcomes.
