Kurichiya or Kurichiyar also known as Hill Brahmins or Malai Brahmins are a matrilineal tribe of Kerala distributed mainly in Wayanad and Kannur districts of Kerala, India. Kurichiyans are one of the Scheduled Tribes of Kerala practicing agriculture.

കുറിച്യരെ പറ്റി നമ്മളിൽ ഭൂരിഭാഗം പേരും അറിയുന്നത് പഴശ്ശിരാജയുടെ യുദ്ധങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ച് പഠിച്ച ചരിത്ര പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ്. അമ്പെയ്ത്തിൽ പ്രഗത്ഭരായ കുറിച്യ പോരാളികളാണ് ബ്രിട്ടീഷുകാർക്കെതിരെയുള്ള യുദ്ധത്തിൽ പഴശ്ശിരാജയെ ഏറ്റവുമധികം സഹായിച്ചത്.
വയനാട് കണ്ണൂർ ജില്ലകളിൽ അധിവസിക്കുന്ന ഒരു പ്രധാന ആദിവാസി വിഭാഗമാണ് കുറിച്യർ. ആധുനിക കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ക്ഷയിച്ചുപോയ കൂട്ടുകുടുംബവ്യവസ്ഥ ഇന്നും തുടർന്നു കൊണ്ട് പോകുന്നവരാണ് ഇവർ. അവർ മറ്റ് ആദിവാസി വിഭാഗങ്ങളെ ക്കാൾ ഉയർന്ന ജാതിയായി കരുതുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് മറ്റ് ജാതിയിൽ പെട്ടവർക്ക് അവർ അയിത്തം കല്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. ശുദ്ധിയും അശുദ്ധിയും അയിത്തവുമെല്ലാം പാലിച്ചിരുന്നതിനാലാകാം ഇവരെ മല ബ്രാഹ്മണർ എന്നും വിളിക്കുന്നു. എന്നാൽ കുറിച്യർ മത്സ്യമാംസാദികൾ കഴിക്കുന്നവരാണ്. വേട്ടയാടിയ മൃഗങ്ങളെയും പക്ഷികളെയും മാത്രമാണ് ഇവർ കഴിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ഇന്ന് ഫോറസ്റ്റ് നിയമങ്ങൾ അവരെ അതിന് അനുവദിക്കുന്നില്ല. എന്നാൽ എല്ലാ വർഷവും കുറിച്യരുടെ വിശേഷ ദിവസമായ തുലാം പത്തിന് നിബന്ധനകളോട് കൂടി വേട്ടയ്ക്ക് പോകുവാൻ പ്രത്യേക അനുമതിയുണ്ട്.

കുറിച്യർ തങ്ങളുടെ വീടുകളെ മിറ്റം എന്നാണ് പറയുന്നത്. കുടുംബത്തെ തറവാട് എന്നും . ഇന്ന് വയനാടും കണ്ണൂരുമായി 54 കുറിച്യ തറവാടുകളാണ് ഉള്ളത് . മണ്ണ് അടിച്ചു ഉറപ്പിച്ച മുറ്റവും വീടിനു ചുറ്റുമുള്ള മതിലുകളുമാണ് ഈ തറവാടുകളുടെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ആകർഷണം. മുറ്റം ചാണകവും മണ്ണും ചേർത്തും വീടിൻ്റെ തറ പുല്ല് കരിച്ച കരി കൊണ്ടും മെഴുകിയതാണ്.

The traditional account of the Kurichiyars advent into Wyanad is that the Kottayam Raja brought them for fighting the Vedar rulers Arippen and Vedan. Their caste-men would not take them back and they settled in Wynad and in the hilly parts of Kottayam. During colonial era, the Kurichya tribe joined with King Pazhashi Raja of Wayanad to fight against the British (during the last decades of the 18th century).

Descendants of the Kurichiya tribes that fought the British alongside Pazhassi Raja have their settlements in and around Banasura Hill. In fact there are four tribal villages lying close to Banasura Hill, three belonging to the Kurichiyas and one belonging to the Paniyas.
