At PulpFest 2023 (coming to Pittsburgh, PA, August 3-6), we'll be celebrating the pivotal pulp year of 1933, and all "Great Pulp Heroes" who debuted that year, including Doc Savage, The Spider, and the Phantom Detective, among others. As we look forward to PulpFest 2023, we're featuring short videos on each of these iconic characters and their creators. Doc Savage debuted in 1933. His first adventures were penned by Lester Dent, under the house name of "Kenneth Robeson." The character was a clear inspiration for that of Superman. After pulp publication of Doc ceased in 1949, in 1964, Bantam began to republish the Doc Savage pulp novels in paperback to great commercial appeal, at least partly owing to the photo-realistic and dramatic cover illustrations of James Bama, using actor/model Steve Holland to pose as Doc.
