“Drey Dreydele” (Spin Dreidel) celebrates without reserve the joy and merriment of Hanukkah season and the traditional lighting of the menorah candles. It was written by the great cantor Moishe Oysher and conductor Abraham Ellstein. Oysher was born in Bessarabia (Moldova) and traveled the world, eventually settling in New York in 1934. He worked as a cantor at the First Roumanian-American Congregation and, though he received offers to perform on Broadway, would not break the sanctity of Shabbat. The verses lead us through the historical story of Hanukkah, punctuated by the gleeful refrain “Drey Dreydele fun nun tsu gerutn” (Spin, dreidel, for good luck).
