A group of internally displaced Ukrainian women, along with local resdients, are working at the Lviv art studio of Magda Dzvin to decorate Easter eggs.

READ MORE: They are exploring the history of ancient Ukrainian arts and crafts, like the painting of Easter eggs, which is known as Pysanky, as well as traditional embroidery.

Using very basic tools of pencils, wax pens, candles, and colored liquids, the group is decorating the eggs with symbols like pine for fertility and deer for strength, hoping their wishes will be granted.

"Painting symbolic signs on eggs is a way to express people's wishes and dreams," said artist Vira Man'ko, who is teaching the women and children on how to decorate the Easter eggs.

Man'ko explains how Pysanky, the traditional Easter egg painting, was affected during the pandemic.

But now during Russia's war on Ukraine, displaced people are eager to participate in the workshop, she says.

The painted eggs are not for sale, and the participants take them home to decorate the Easter basket on their tables.
