There are several notable swordmasters from premodern Japan, but this guy is by far my favorite.

Tsukahara Bokuden (1487 - 1571) had a track record of winning 212 one-on-one bouts and he survived 37 full-on battles. So at one point, he started up his own school of swordsmanship.

So legend goes that one day, Bokuden got on a boat to cross Lake Biwa next to Kyoto. There was a young warrior in another passenger seat and he noticed, “You’re Master Bokuden! What’s my elevator pitch! What’s my elevator pitch! Please let me challenge you! Just one round! If I beat him, I’ll be famous!”

Bokuden was like, “Oh God, leave me alone. Relax, bro. We’ll do it on that small island. We don’t want your blood sprayed all over these other passengers.”

So when the boat reached the shore of the small island, the young warrior leaped off the boat first, because he’s all pumped, ready for the bout of his life. But when he turned around, what he saw was Bokuden paddling the boat offshore 😂.

Bokuden’s philosophy in life was
