Are you a beginner and want to get better? So you practice and practice but don't seem to improve? Well my friends, odds are there is one area of your playing that you are overlooking that should become a much stronger... your strumming hand! We spend so much time thinking about the fretting hand, where to put it to play chords, where to put our fingers to play a scale or a lick, that we forget all that power, all the rhythm and all the groove comes from the strumming hand. You can fret a G chord all day but until you strum it doesn't make any noise.

I see some students learn very quickly and I see some of taking a lot longer, and the difference between their progress usually comes down to rhythm. Not necessarily strum patterns but actually keeping a beat, staying in time, the ability to play without speeding up or slowing down and to do so while alternating between fingerpicking and strumming and while mixing the strum patterns and the fingerpicking patterns in the same song, or even the same measure. This tutorial has 9 different rhythm exercises each played over a drum beat at 80 BPM. You should play through all 9 of these and identify all the patterns that weren't extremely easy. Those are the exercises that you're going to do for a warm up every single time you pick up your ukulele, every time. Once you get all these down try to speed up the drum beat, or slow it down (really slow beats can be very tricky to keep time to as well) and once you get to a BPM when they are all tricky again start over, play through, identify the ones that are giving you trouble and repeat and focus on those ones, rinse and repeat and you will see a massive change in your confidence and your overall ability to play the Ukulele.
