njaru nadeel or rice transplantation, is the traditional practice of planting rice seedlings in paddy fields in the Indian state of Kerala. The term literally translates to "planting the rice seedlings," and it is a labor intensive but crucial part of rice cultivation.

The process of njaru nadal
1)Seedling preparation: Rice seeds are first grown in a specially prepared nursery bed, or njattu kani. The seedlings, or njaru, are left to grow in these beds until they are the right size for transplantation.
2)Field preparation: The main rice paddy field is filled with water and ploughed. It is worked into soft mud to make it suitable for planting.
3)Transplantation: Workers, traditionally a group of women, pull the mature seedlings from the nursery bed and transplant them by hand, one by one, into the muddy main field. The planting is done in rhythmic rows to ensure proper spacing.
4)Cultural significance: The activity has a strong cultural dimension. As they work, the farmers sing traditional folk songs called njattupattu. These songs help to lighten the mood, maintain a rhythmic pace, and celebrate the agricultural tradition.
5)Modern methods: While manual transplantation is still practiced, modern technology like rice transplanter machines is also used to increase efficiency and reduce labor costs.
