Описание к видео Baladk Steer and Urban Art Festival 2019 - Rough Cut - Amman - Jordan

Baladk Project – Amman / Jordan
Curated by Al Balad Theatre
2019

BALADK’s Street & Urban Art Festival is an eight days’ event celebrating the urban art movement. Championing live art, murals, graffiti and artist talks, the Festival is an important gathering of the global artistic community in Amman – Jordan and Jordanian artists. World class visual and mural artists collaborate with Jordanian artists for a cultural celebration in various locations in Amman from the period of April 25th to May 2nd, 2019.

Baladk’s mission is also about connecting artists; for this reason, we advocate joint projects and collaborations between artists to leave a more creative imprint on the walls of their city. Emerging artists can accompany participating featured artists as they create their pieces around the city.

The beige façade of Amman city is one of the most recognisable in the Middle East with its limestone apartments and strict building codes. However, in the past few years, it has been given a splash of colour thanks to the blossoming street art scene.

Baladk Festival is guided by two principles: the first is that street art is an art form that brings artists (and art itself) closer to the people and removes it from the confines of closed spaces; and the second is that it creates collaborations between artists, art groups, and community organizations all over the city breaking barriers and creating a more sustainable and open artistic culture.

With the increased diversification of the population of Jordan, we strongly believe that street art will continue to be a very effective tool in communicating & resisting the multiple forms of oppression practiced on different demographics. Street art is effective because it is generated by the community; we do not go to the people: they gather & express their ideas and feelings in the most creative ways.

Theme/Topic: Inclusion
As we live in a world where people are labeled and segregated based on differences that for the most part are negligible if we look at the bigger picture. How does a person’s gender, appearance and status affect other people's assumptions that end up, whether deliberately or unintentionally, excluding or including them? How does that translate into a grander scheme of living within a community? How do we include and how do we exclude? Creating integrated systems and spaces that help in including individuals and having spaces that do the exact opposite. How can we construct integrated systems and spaces that are inclusive in contrast with spaces that do the exact opposite?
let us consider what will happen if we shift into listening and understanding each other instead, and banishing our ignorance and fear of these differences. Can we focus more on our similarities and listening to each other’s stories and welcome and learn from one another?
How about creating art and murals around the street to open up conversations about those who are excluded, exploring the causes, context, and effects? What does inclusion look like? Artists would express their artistic interpretations of inclusion and explore the similarities and differences between us as individuals in the bodies that we live in.
