On 29 May 1985, a crowd crush at Brussels’ Heysel Stadium claimed 39 lives and injured more than 600. Ahead of the European Cup final, Liverpool fans breached a stadium barrier and charged into a section of Juventus supporters. The resulting panic caused fans to flee towards a concrete wall, which collapsed under the pressure. The tragedy, for which 14 Liverpool fans were later convicted of manslaughter, exposed deep failures in crowd management and stadium safety. Its consequences continue to shape European football.
