An eyelid sty is an infection on the eyelid caused by bacteria. Symptoms include swelling, redness, and tenderness on the eyelid and may discharge pus.

The most common cause of eyelid sty is a blocked oil gland on the eyelid. The blockage can be caused by bacteria, dirt, makeup, or skin oil. This makes it easier for bacteria to grow and cause an infection.

The infection can spread to other parts of the eye, such as the tear duct, which can worsen the symptoms. If this happens, you will need to see a doctor for treatment.

Treatment for eyelid sty includes warm compresses, antibiotics, and in some cases, surgical drainage. The infection should clear up within a few days after treatment.

You can also prevent styes from occurring by keeping your eyelids clean. Wash your eyelids with mild soap and warm water every day to remove any bacteria, dirt, or makeup. Make sure to remove your makeup at night before going to bed.
