“Bigger and stronger”: Swedish flag raised at NATO headquarters to commemorate membership

The Swedish flag was raised at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium on Monday to commemorate the alliance’s newest member.

Sweden became an official part of NATO on Thursday, after depositing its instrument of accession to the organization with the U.S. in Washington, D.C.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg was joined by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson for the flag-raising ceremony. The leaders expressed their positivity in the partnership.

“NATO is bigger and stronger,” Stoltenberg said, adding that Ukraine, too, is “closer” to becoming a part of the international group amid its ongoing war with Russia.

“Russia will stay a threat to Euro-Atlantic security for a foreseeable future. It was in this light Sweden applied to join the NATO defence alliance, to gain security, but also to provide security,” Kristersson said.
