Rosa Parks (1913–2005) was an American civil rights activist whose refusal to give up her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, became a pivotal moment in the Civil Rights Movement. Born on February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama, Parks grew up in a racially segregated South. She worked as a seamstress and was active in local civil rights organizations, including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), where she served as secretary.

On December 1, 1955, Parks made history when she was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white man on a city bus. At that time, Montgomery’s buses were segregated, and African Americans were required to sit at the back of the bus and yield their seats to white passengers when the front was full. Parks' act of defiance was not an isolated incident but a carefully planned act of protest against the unjust system of segregation.

Her arrest sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a 381-day boycott led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., during which African Americans refused to use the city’s buses. The boycott ultimately led to a Supreme Court decision declaring segregation on public buses unconstitutional, marking a major victory in the fight for civil rights.

Parks became a symbol of resistance to racial injustice and an icon of the Civil Rights Movement. She continued to work for equality and social justice throughout her life, traveling the country to speak about her experiences and advocating for civil rights. Rosa Parks passed away on October 24, 2005, at the age of 92, leaving behind a powerful legacy of courage and activism that changed the course of American history.
