This incredible snapshot was of a time in 1900 where there were only about 1.6 billion people living on the planet, a quarter of today's population. Architecture found itself at a crossroads and entire neighbourhoods sprung up as if from thin air as urbanisation continued apace. Many buildings copied the styles of the past creating Neoclassicism and Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque Revivals and meanwhile, the country estates of the aristocracy continued to dominate the rural landscape. London remained the political and monetary centre at 1900 and Queen Victoria was still on the throne, being in the 64th year of her reign. Asia began to undergo massive change as Japan began its path towards industrialisation and Brazil was dealing with the consequences of slavery which had only been abolished in 1888. Paris was the belle of the ball in 1900 as the Paris World's Fair showed the strength of the globalist economy and the international community of scientist and engineers. Mont Blanc hadn't experienced any ice melt and Mount Fuji was still revered. But nature was not always so gentle ? the Texan town of Galveston was destroyed by a hurricane on September 8th killing 8,000 people.
