What a powerful day. My boyfriend and I decided to spend our Juneteenth visiting the ruins of a plantation and a slave cemetery, right here in Austin. I have been here my whole life and never could've imagine this was an experience I was missing out on. It was heavy day, but it was also beautiful. The somber feeling that surrounded us was not aided by the unkept state of the grounds. Thankfully, there is a group that is dedicated to fixing up the property (links below). Being able to speak aloud the names of those who desperately deserved to be acknowledged, was a privilege. And who would've thought I would stumble upon the grave of a distant relative! Mother Henrietta Tinnon, I thank you for leading me to you. I don't know if I truly believe that you did, or if it was all just eerily coincidental, but I am grateful all the same.
