Senior political leader Bilal Gani Lone has strongly defended Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, cautioning against what he described as shallow, dishonest and dangerous attempts to reduce the M#irwaiz’s stature to mere social media optics.

In a statement issued to Kashmir News Service (KNS), Lone said that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s stature cannot be judged by a Twitter or X bio, and that attempts to diminish his role through online commentary reflect a serious misunderstanding of his position, responsibilities and legacy.

“Beyond the murky world of politics, Mirwaiz Sahib is the custodian of an institution that represents faith, culture and the collective identity of the people of Kashmir,” Lone said. He added that as a political leader, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has consistently stood for peace, unity and reconciliation, never for the pursuit of power.

Recalling his association with the Mirwaiz spanning more than two decades, Lone said he can personally vouch for his sincerity, sense of purpose and unwavering commitment to the self-respect and dignity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

He pointed out that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has paid an enormous personal price from a very young age, having lost both his father and later his uncle to the conflict, while taking on responsibilities that many of his critics, Lone said, would lack the courage to shoulder.

Lone expressed deep concern over what he termed coordinated campaigns of abuse, conspiracy theories and character assassination by sections of the political class and social media trolling machinery. He warned that such reckless behaviour ignores the dangerous consequences similar campaigns have produced in the past.

“Everyone falters and makes mistakes, but mistakes alone do not define a person,” Lone said. “What truly matters is the ability to reflect, course-correct and find more practical ways to create a meaningful impact as times and circumstances evolve. This is what responsible leadership demands.”

He stressed that rigidity does not resolve conflicts but instead deepens them, adding that complex political challenges require foresight, vision and acceptance of ground realities so that society can move forward without inflicting further harm.

“Politics is not static,” Lone said, particularly in asymmetrical conflicts where lives are at stake. He underlined that human dignity, respect and the preservation of life are non-negotiable principles.

Questioning the motives of those attacking Mirwaiz Umar Farooq over a bio change, Lone asked whether such critics genuinely stand for peace or are comfortable with the continuation of conflict and further loss of lives.

“It is easy to pontificate from the comfort of one’s home,” he said, “but far more difficult to stand where Mirwaiz Sahib stands and confront the harsh realities that come with that position.”

Lone further said that the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) is an idea, not a frozen doctrine, and that ideas must evolve with changing political realities if lives are to be saved and people’s honour preserved. He warned that those attacking the Mirwaiz often fail to grasp the broader damage they are causing—not only to society, but also to the very idea of a well-meaning Kashmiri that Mirwaiz Umar Farooq represents.

While acknowledging that questioning leaders is legitimate in a democracy, Lone cautioned that reckless vilification is creating a dangerous environment for the Mirwaiz, compromising not only his dignity but also his security. Such conduct, he said, is irresponsible and should attract accountability under the law.

Reiterating his personal bond, Lone said he regards Mirwaiz Umar Farooq as a younger brother, irrespective of political differences, and that disagreements have never diminished his responsibility to stand by him as a friend and as a matter of principle.

“These values were instilled in me by my father, who sacrificed his life in pursuit of peace and reconciliation,” Lone said, adding that he continues to carry that mission forward through democratic means, seeking relief, dignity and justice for people who have been wronged, humiliated and abused.

He concluded by urging Mirwaiz’s critics to look inward before pointing fingers at others, saying that honest introspection may provide a much-needed reality check on the intolerance, deceit and bitterness that many themselves promote in Kashmir—often in the name of politics and so-called change.
