There’s something kind of magical about seeing a ferry cross the fjord without making a sound. Lagatun looks like a regular car ferry at first glance - but this thing runs fully electric most of the time (up to 98-99%, actually), and that changes everything.

No diesel rumble, no smoke - just smooth, silent sailing across the water. Built together with her sister ship Munken and delivered at the end of 2018, Lagatun is part of Norway’s push toward cleaner and smarter coastal transport. Between the two of them, they save hundreds of thousands of litres of marine diesel oil every year. That’s a lot of exhaust we’re not breathing.

In this video, I follow Lagatun with a high tech drone on one of those calm fjord crossings during summer that just feels right. It’s a short moment, but one that says a lot about where we’re headed — with ferries that respect the place they sail through.

Not bad for public transport, right?
