Recovery From Depression
As part of research for my book ‘Back From The Brink’, I surveyed 4064 people who struggled with depression and anxiety. The volunteers were asked to rate how important 60 different strategies were to their recovery.

The results of this research were important and fascinating, and have helped to shape the resources you are able to access through my book, sites and workshops. It is called CARE:
• Compassion
• Access experts
• Revitalising work
• Exercise
Why is CARE important?
Depression and bipolar disorder are illnesses that manifest in different ways and for different reasons. This means no person suffers in exactly the same way and no treatment strategy fits all people or situations.
CARE extends across all aspects of your life and treatment: finding people you can talk to and building a support network, getting the right professional help, finding fulfilling, meaningful work which can help you thrive and physical activity to keep you healthy, eating properly and maintaining the energy you need to both tackle the illness and everyday life in general.

Compassion
Compassion or emotional support was judged the most important component of recovery. Emotional support can come from friends and loved ones, support groups, medical professionals, and work colleagues. Emotional support contributed 4 out the top 10 strategies rated (of a possible 60 options).
Employees say that when a supervisor or someone at work cares about them as a person, it is the biggest predictor of recovery and return to productivity.
Access experts
The biggest regret of those with depression and their carers was that they didn’t get an accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan earlier. According to the Black Dog Institute despite depression and anxiety disorders accounting for 26% of all GP visits, most medical students only receive about 6 hours of lectures concerning mood disorders.
Is it any wonder that many are ill equipped to properly diagnosis conditions and provide evidence based treatment plans. Finding a mental health savvy GP is a key foundation for getting the right support. If necessary, it is also essential to find a competent psychologist and/or psychiatrist who cares about you as a person.
Re-vitalising work
In a result that will surprise many, fulfilling work was rated number 6 (out of 60 options) in strategies that assist with recovery. To place this in context, it rated above cognitive behaviour therapy and medication. It is clearly seen as an important component of recovery and wellbeing.
Through my own work in recruitment, outplacement, and career planning I know from experience that a large percentage of employees aren’t in the right role and this will often have a detrimental impact on their mental health. Similarly, a toxic immediate work environment with harassment or bullying can be detrimental to mental health.
Exercise
Vigorous and moderate exercise both rated in the top 10 (out of 60 options). According to Mayo Clinic 30 minute brisk walk improves your mood 2,4,8, and 12 hours later compared to those that don’t exercise.
One of the common symptoms of depression is fatigue and an overactive mind and underactive body.
