Manufacturing of Connecting Rods
How is a connecting rod manufactured?
Connecting rods are highly strained constructional elements of an engine. A connection rod also: piston rod, thrust rod, driving rod of a crank mechanism serves as a connection between the crankshaft or the crankpin and its straight-line moving unit, may this be a crosshead or a piston.
The connecting rod converts the linear drive of either the force or the working piston into the rotatory motion of the crankshaft linear reciprocating action rotary action.
One-piece connecting rods without removable bearing caps are used to assemble detachable crankshafts. They are frequently mounted on anti-friction bearing engines, which include, among others, small appliance engines, mopeds and sometimes even motorcycle engines.
Since connecting rods are exposed to high strain, they must fit fatigue endurance limits.
Commonly used materials for connecting rods are C70 up to 42CrMo4, micro-alloyed steel and sintered metals. In specific ranges, as for example in the sports engine range, one finds special heat-treatable steels, or for weight saving factors even titanium. Sometimes conn-rods are even made of cast iron. The manufacturing of connecting rods varies, depending on whether they are produced in a large-scale production or a small-scale. With large-scale production, piston rods will be forged, molded by powdered steel or sintered, whereas piston rods in small series will be cut off from solid metal pieces. Steam-engines, steamships or other steam engines run with piston rods. The piston rods are attached to the power units of steam engines, directly affecting the so-called driving rod by pushing the live axle of the locomotive.
According to the so-called principle of the reciprocating piston engine, the connecting rod transmits the force of the kinetic energy generated by the piston and the crankshaft onto the internal-combustion engine.
In a reciprocating piston compressor, the connecting rod transmits the rotary pushing force components of the crankshaft onto the working piston which moves in straight-line. The result is a compression ratio effect.
