on first listen, turn out the lights... and then listen to this whole track, then, only then go back and read all this... imagine being there... that's all...
I have heard and/or seen this song performed live literally hundreds of times... this one stands above them all for me, beats Woodstock by a mile, maybe only the 1994 Asbury Park NJ show comes close for me... but that said...here is why. First of all the performance was on the "best of" mini tour so they were sharp and playing all the classics up to that point. Secondly this is from a local cable TV broadcast and the camera work is reminiscent of Austin City Limits (the closeups of ty's playing is insane as well as Jerry - you can see ty's wedding ring on the frets!)... it is THAT good (and the guy who engineered this is here on youtube - thanks for this (shout @ Dave Prewitt) !!!). Thirdly, and most importantly, this is a one off in terms of dUg's performance (and I think it bled into the rest of the guys as well). Here is the background I know of, dUg had taken a young man under his wing as a friend "Kevin".. he was 17 at the time, he killed himself with a shotgun, I don't recall if it was @ dUg's house or not but either way this concert was just a few weeks after the tragedy, if you have the second Poundhound record "Pineapple Skunk" listen to the song "Rain"... it was written at this time and about this loss in dUg's life, the demo version of "Rain" is legendary to me... super emotional and did not translate with the same weight into the released album version, still a great song but maybe I should post the 2 side by side with comments some day... any way... you have the usual "break"/sermon here but it is obviously very personal, watch how dUg almost winces after he says how Kevin shot himself but then it turns a touch and he gets to the positive... I have seen many dUg sermons in my day, that was special... and then after the song ends he adds more. I never got a chance to ask dUg about this... I know he mostly just never listens to Over My Head live (as per interviews) even though in the moment he does infuse emotion into every performance.. but I know this one is special. (and yes, I know this show is out there in full version but I felt compelled to really give it some context and share my thoughts)
