Описание к видео Toughest Sport by Skill- Data Visualizations using Tableau Software by John Tritto

For this project, I was assigned to create data visualizations using Tableau Software and to create a video explaining my process. To do this, I began by searching for a data set that interested me and one that contained enough data to work with. I found a data set on a website titled Makeover Monday, called "Toughest Sport by Skill." I then downloaded the excel file associated with it and imported it into Tableau.

Next, I decided to create a research question in order to have a purpose for this project besides simply creating graphs. The questions I came up with are: "Which is the toughest sport by skill, and are there any specific skills that are more important than others?" I then created my first visualization with this question in mind. I began by dragging the word "sport" into the rows section and the measure value, "rank," into the columns section. Then I had filtered the data to only show the top 20 toughest sports. This have me some insight on my first research question and found that boxing was the toughest sport.

For my second visualization, I chose to compare the skills of the toughest sport (boxing) to the easiest sport (fishing). I did this by dragging the measure values of each skill into the rows and putting the sport name into the columns. To visualize the data, I displayed it into a side-by-side bar graph. This helped me further gain insight into my second research question, "are there any specific skills that are more important than others?"

For my third visualization, I created a similar data visualization by comparing two sports that were ranked in the same position. The sports chosen water polo and alpine skiing, which were both ranked the 11th toughest sports. Next, I filtered the data to only include those two sports and created another side-by-side bar graph. This graph helped me to conclude that maybe it is not one specific skill that is needed to determine a sport as tough, but a collection of numerous skills.

For my fourth visualization, I decided to choose one specific skill, flexibility, and compared it to its original ranking. For me, this was a challenging visualization as I was unsure how to actually filter the data by flexibility. Once I figured it out, I reached my conclusion that no singular skill is a clear determinant of a tough sport.

For my last visualization, I created one that shows all of the sports and skills. To do this, I put all of the skills in the columns section and sports in the rows section. Next, I filtered the sports by rank. The number values displayed in each column represent that the skill is the highest ranked in that specific sport. This visualization further proved my hypothesis that a specific skill does not matter in a sport.

In conclusion, all of my visualizations combined helped me answer my research questions. While answering my research questions, I also further developed my data visualization skills using Tableau Software. I have learned new information and hope my viewers (classmates) also learned new information.
