The "birth" of the CIA's most notorious mind control program did not happen in a lab, but in a memo. Project MK-Ultra was officially born on April 13, 1953, when CIA Director Allen Dulles authorized the program to counter perceived Soviet and Chinese advances in "brainwashing" and interrogation techniques during the Korean War.
The Precursors: It evolved directly from two earlier, cruder programs: Project BLUEBIRD (1950) and Project ARTICHOKE (1951), which had already begun experimenting with hypnosis and interrogation.
The First Operational Act: Just two weeks after its official birth, on April 27, 1953, the program launched its first operational gear with Subproject 1. This initial subproject was not a field experiment, but a secretive funding mechanism designed to funnel CIA money to a "private" researcher at a university (often believed to be the University of Minnesota or similar institutions in later subprojects) without revealing the Agency's hand.
The Architect: The program was placed under the command of Sidney Gottlieb, a chemist known as the "Poisoner in Chief," who immediately began accelerating experiments with LSD, eventually expanding the project to over 149 subprojects involving universities, prisons, and unwitting citizens.
