Описание к видео How Muslims and Jews set aside the Palestine conflict to cooperate against Fascism - Introduction

How Muslims and Jews set aside the Palestine conflict to cooperate against Fascism c1933-1942
The relationship of Jews and Muslims in Britain in the 20th century is uncharted territory for most people. However Robert Kanter, lecturer in History education at Manchester Metropolitan University and previously head of History at Bury CE High School, is researching it for his PhD thesis.

He has now given his second talk about his research to the Muslim Jewish Forum of Greater Manchester.

The first, in March 2021, covered “Anglo-Jewry’s interactions with converts to Islam in the period 1900-1920” and can be watched on the Forum’s website page https://www.muslimjewish.org.uk/Past-...

His second talk, on Sunday 20 November 2022, covered “Jewish-Muslim solidarity in Britain against the rise of Fascism / Nazism c1933-1942.”

The 1930’s saw growing international discord and uncertainty with the rise of Nazism. At the same time Arab-Jewish relations in the British Mandate of Palestine were deteriorating.

Despite that, there was a tangible strengthening of Jewish-Muslim relations in Britain itself.

Although these interactions were often limited to cultural and intellectual spheres, there was a sense of unity against the increasing dangers of Nazism, whose racial policies and thinking was anathema to Jews and Muslims in Britain alike.

This period coincided with the early growth of interfaith relations more generally. Robert explored some case studies to highlight the complexities and underlying anxieties which characterised these relations.

It is on YouTube in four sections:

1. Forum Co-Chair Cllr Heather Fletcher introduces Robert Kanter.
2. Robert’s PowerPoint presentation.
3. The Q & A session.
4. Vote of thanks by Forum Executive Committee member Cllr Rabnawaz Akbar
