It is told in Matsya Purana that there was a war between Lord Shiva and a demon named Andhakasura. During that time, some drops of Lord Shiva's sweat had also fallen on the earth. From those drops of sweat of Lord Shiva, the mighty and almighty Vastu Purush was born. After his birth, all the gods were frightened by his huge body and strength and started praying to Lord Brahma to protect him from that terrible demon. Lord Brahma told all those gods and goddesses to bury him in the ground in such a way that his head was towards north-east and his feet towards south-west.

All the gods and goddesses did as per the orders of Lord Brahma, then the giant man prayed that all the gods and goddesses should also come and live with him on earth. Lord Brahma was pleased with his prayer and named him Vastu Purush and gave him a boon that all the planetary lords living on this earth will offer the first offering of Havan on any festival in the name of Vastu Purush.
