Welcome to the Warwick Economics Summit 2022! We were delighted to host José Manuel Barroso, the Former President of the European Commission.

Jose Manuel Barroso became a member of Parliament in Portugal for the first time in 1985. He held senior positions in domestic politics such as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Leader of the Opposition before eventually becoming the Prime Minister of Portugal. After two successful years in this capacity, he was nominated as President of the European Commission in 2004. 
After 5 successful years heading the EU, he was re-elected for a second term, becoming only the second person in history to do so. In 2012, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the Union. 
With a wealth of experience leading the world we currently live in, he implemented strategies and made decisions that influenced our everyday lives. 
Currently, Jose Manuel Barroso is the Chairman of Goldman Sachs International and GAVI, the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation which is responsible for COVAX and global vaccine distribution.

The Warwick Economics Summit (WES) is the largest student-run Economics summit in Europe. Now having run for nearly two decades, the Summit has evolved in form and stature into a truly international forum where talented students from various universities listen to some of the world's most revered and inspirational speakers on a wide range of topics.
