The USTS Patriot State arrived at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on 22 February 2025 to complete Sea Term 2025. Because the ship was attempting to tie up at the Academy before the onset of weather, the Patriot State transited the Cape Cod Canal eastbound before turning about and transiting again, westbound.

The geometry and regulation of the Canal means that the training ship can only enter its berth when approaching the Academy from the east and at high water slack. This allows the ship to stem the tide until the precise moment of slack water, entering the berth before the ebb tide reverses the flow of the Canal.

However, the wind restrictions on this maneuver required the ship to moor to the State Pier instead of rounding the corner into her berth, requiring a separate movement of the ship two days later.
