Jan Johnston is more than a voice—she’s an icon. Crowned The First Lady of Trance, Jan’s ethereal songwriting, soul-stirring lyrics, and vocals have defined an era of electronic music, becoming the spiritual heartbeat behind some of the most legendary trance and progressive anthems of all time.
Her collaborations with global pioneers like Paul Oakenfold, Tiësto, BT, and Paul van Dyk created timeless tracks such as “Flesh,” “Calling Your Name,” “Skydive,” and “Silent Words”, elevating trance into a higher emotional realm. With a unique gift for blending raw vulnerability with celestial power, Jan’s voice doesn’t just ride a melody—it becomes one.
Beyond the charts and the clubs, Jan is an enduring muse for a global generation of ravers, dreamers, and creators. Her lyrical storytelling, through her songwriting & signature vocal timbre, and magnetic stage presence continue to inspire a new wave of producers, DJs, and fans across continents.
Today, Jan stands not only as a revered recording artist and performer, but also as a symbol of authenticity, empowerment, and the timeless magic of trance. Whether through fresh new releases, iconic reworks, or her upcoming Versetrance brand, Jan Johnston remains the unmistakable voice of the genre—and a legend still writing her verse.
Jan and BT began collaborating after BT heard Jan's original song "The Prayer" (also known as "Calling Your Name"). Jan came up with all the lyrics and melodies for tracks like "Remember," "Mercury & Solace," "Communicate," "Lullaby for Gaia," and "Confession."
She and BT made a significant impact on the trance and dance world with classic tracks. Soon, Jan Johnston found herself in demand as a writer and vocalist for a growing number of electronic producers. More hits followed, including "Skydive (I Feel Wonderful)" with Anthony Pappa and Alan Bremner's Freefall.
She then signed with Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label and delivered the singles "Flesh" and "Silent Words," among others. Since then, she has collaborated on numerous trance productions, including tracks with Tiësto, Svenson & Gielen, Chicane, Cosmic Gate, and other top producers. Jan also co-wrote several songs on Paul van Dyk's 2003 Grammy-nominated album Reflections, writing four songs and providing vocals on a fifth.
In 2016, Jan released "When Everything Was Possible," a collection of drum and bass tracks recorded in 1998 with Jamie Myerson.
In 2017, she released her album The Travelling Vixen, and her song "Massive" from the album received a fresh 2024 remix by Johnny Vicious.
Jan's Emerging album was released in 2019, featuring Paul Oakenfold's Unafraid Remix.
"Calling Your Name," "Flesh," and other tracks were re-released with brand new remixes and originals that were previously unheard, including the 1999 House Mix and Tour Mix.
Jan's songs have also been featured in famous movies like Swordfish, American Pie, and a G6 Japanese animation movie. Jan has written and released around 40+ new tracks since mid-2020, collaborating with top music producers.
She's also been performing gigs in Europe and Australia, finishing 2024 with a brilliant gig in Liverpool with Paul Oakenfold and other guests. In 2025, she'll have many more new releases.
Jan is always available to write songs for new upcoming producers if she likes the music; she'll create a beautiful song around it.
Jan will be in Malta in March 2025 and Belgium in October 2025, with other dates coming soon. Keep an eye out on her Facebook page for collaborations or bookings: [email protected]."
