The Hope Bay Project is located in Nunavut, Canada, and encompasses the design and construction of a unique gold processing plant for the Doris underground gold mine, situated 160 kilometres from Cambridge Bay in the Arctic Circle.

Unlike outside processing plants, the Hope Bay processing plant has been designed to fit inside a building of approximately 150m long by 50m wide, allowing TMAC to control the environment where the plant operates. The size of the building was locked down early in the design phase to allow it to be designed and delivered one year ahead of the processing plant. This meant the processing plant had to be developed to fit within this confined space.

Gekko were selected to supply the processing plant after an extensive global search. Along with its proven track record in providing innovative solutions and low energy alternatives to the mining industry, the features of the solution provided by Gekko that resulted in its selection included the following:

Low-height design which reduced building height by up to 10m, reducing building construction cost, heating costs, operating costs and improved maintenance access.

Modular design which allowed for construction, assembly and factory commissioning of the plant in Ballarat prior to shipment. This resulted in the fastest possible installation and commissioning time once the plant is shipped to site, thereby minimising the time to production commencement, reducing site costs and working within constrained manpower limitations.

Staged construction / delivery of two 1,000 tpd Pythons, milling, flotation trains to enable the project to start up at a throughput matched to the mining rate but easily expandable to long term production rates. The dual train system also allows continuity of throughput if part of the plant is unavailable.
