My good friend and I experienced an unbelievable day of flying wild Alaska looking for Sitka blacktail deer on Montague Island. After a streak of bad weather prevented us from flying we finally got a good weather day in November of 2024 to make the trip in my bush plane out to Prince William Sound for a same day land and hunt deer opportunity. In certain areas of Alaska and for certain species only, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations allow for hunting the same day you fly in a private airplane. This makes it possible to do a one day hunt which is what we did and our quarry was the Sitka Blacktail Deer which are resident to the island.

Since it was the first good of flying day after a long period of bad weather we soon found out everyone else had the same idea we had. As we flew around the island we discovered that every good beach to land on had one, two or in some cases 5 airplanes on it. We finally had to just pick a spot to land a mile up a beach from another airplane and try calling some deer.

The limited winter time daylight hours meant we only had a couple hours to hunt before we needed to head back for home to avoid crossing the over the Chugach mountains in the dark. While we did get skunked on deer that day we experienced an unbelievable day of flying. There was clear skies and only a whisper of a breeze which made the flight smooth as butter.

It was such an amazing day with a really good friend out in the backcountry flying wild Alaska and enjoying God's beautiful creation. We really do have a great backyard!
