Powers Irish Rye REVIEW || BYE BYE American Rye!

Bye Bye American Rye! This is Powers 100% Irish Rye Whiskey!

This is a new Irish whiskey, only recently released from Powers, and it is definitely a different style of whiskey, as Powers are usually known for their Pot Still Whiskeys. This however, is an Irish Rye whiskey.

Rye isn't that common of a grain in Ireland, so Powers actually commissioned a local farm to grow them rye for this whiskey, so this is 100% Irish rye from grain to glass!

This is very similar to an American Rye, but there is one key difference, where American ryes have to be aged in virgin oak casks, the Powers rye whiskey was aged in a mixture of virgin casks, 1st fill and 2nd fill casks, so it will have a softer, less spicy feel than most American ryes.

It also comes in at 43.2% ABV, so it's definitely on the lighter side, but still above the 40% floor, so I'm glad about that!


Tasting Notes
Nose:
There's notes of burnt orange peel, caramel, toffee and some black pepper immediately coming out of the glass, but behind that is a little bit of a herbal note and some creaminess which reminds me of a caramelised banana.

Palate:
Very sweet and spicy in equal measure, more of the orange peel, but the spiciness has moved into a fresh, gingery spice, with a bit of heat, but less peppery. There's a little bit of an orchard fruit note, as well as more light herbal notes and a touch of oak at the end.

Finish:
The finish is medium-long, with the sweeter notes fading off and the spices and oak lingering on much longer.

Ultimately, I think I would like to see this at a higher proof, as I think the herbal, spicy rye notes would shine through a lot more even if it was up at 46%.
