Alone in his room, Sunburst decided to read Mistmane, a story about the sorceress Mistmane. However, as he began to read it, the book itself told him to go outside. Mysteriously, every page of the book told him to do so, as to honor the memory of the sorceress. Eventually, Sunburst did so. The book then told him to go to the gardens, which Sunburst protested against but did so anyway. Happy, the book finally let Sunburst read from it.

The story opened with a background on Mistmane, how she was the most beautiful pony in the land, yet gave up her own beauty to save a friend and her kingdom. Now appearing old and fragile, Mistmane never stopped loving her kingdom and never stopped going on adventures.

While in a forest, Mistmane heard a large noise in the distance. Thinking somepony may have been hurt, she galloped her way to the site only to see Canterlot Castle in construction. A rope gave way, causing a rock to fall, leaving a small crater in its wake. The forepony of the site grew frustrated and ordered his men to take a lunch break. Mistmane confronted the leader and told him that she'd stay overnight to see what the problem was. Though grateful, the leader was worried for her safety but she assured him that she could take care of herself. While discussing What transpired, Mistmane noticed how huge the castle was and the leader admitted that they would have to tear down the entire forest to make way for it, causing Mistmane to grow distressed.

Later that night, Mistmane loved her time in the forest and befriended many of the animals there. While enjoying her time, Mistmane was confronted by Princess Luna. Luna was hostile, trying to get Mistmane to leave her castle, believing some sort of evil magic was "unbuilding" the castle. Luna chased Mistmane until they were both near the forest where they both gazed upon the "unbuilders", a group of animals. Luna's hostile demeanor changed as she saw the cute animals. Despite this, Luna was horrified when she saw the animals destroying her castle. She ran up to them and demanded that they would stop and even began to use her magic to make them freeze. A bear roared at Luna to make her stop, horrified, Luna threatened the bear but couldn't bring herself to actually do so. Especially when the bear looked at her with sympathetic eyes. Mistmane taught Luna how to speak the language of the animals, allowing her to truly listen to what the animals had to say. Realizing what the animals wanted, Luna agreed to redesign the castle to instead be a tall beacon of hope rather than an iron citadel. Befriending the animals, Luna flew off to let the others know of her new design.

Mistmane was proud of the princess for finding her own solution and made sure the animals wouldn't cause anymore problems. Luna showed the designs to Celestia and Starswirl who were both impressed. The construction workers greatly preferred the new design, and the construction of the castle went far smoother than ever before. In the gardens of the castle, Starswirl happily remembered his dear friend, Mistmane.

Now finished with the story, Sunburst thought he saw Mistmane herself and went to great her, only to realize it was a group of animals.
