Makgoe and his protector, Warrant Officer Vuyo Mdi, died in the early hours of last Sunday morning after their car hit a cow on the N1 near Winburg.

Makgoe has been granted an official provincial funeral category one, which means that it will have prescribed police ceremonial honours. Makgoe was a member of the Free State legislature since 1994 and was the province's longest-serving Education MEC,having been appointed in 2009.

Tributes poured in from across the country following his death, with Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga describing it as a huge loss to the nation's education sector.
