One student was arrested Tuesday after a pair of lunch hour disturbances at Preble High School led to the recovery of a handgun with ammunition.

According to the Green Bay Police Department, it started when officers responded to a reported lunchtime fight in the commons. While addressing that issue, a second altercation commenced, requiring additional police response.

Further investigation revealed a juvenile, who is believed to have been involved in the first fight, brought the gun and ammunition into the school. Both were located by a police officer in a backpack in a locked classroom.

The student was taken into custody. GBPD says it is recommending charges "that will be determined as the investigation continues."

As a precaution, there will be an increased police presence Wednesday at Preble High School.

Below is a letter sent from the Green Bay Area Public School District to Preble families and staff:

"Dear Preble Families & Staff:

"Early this afternoon there was an altercation in Preble’s commons. Upon the follow-up investigation, the School Resource Officer found a gun with ammunition in the backpack, which was located in a locked classroom, of one of the students who had participated in the altercation. The backpack had not been in the commons nor in the student’s possession at the time. The School Resource Officer requested additional police presence and multiple students were questioned. Please note, inaccurate information regarding the situation has been circulating on social media.
We want to thank the quick action of our administrative team, the School Resource Officer and the Green Bay Police Department, resulting in no harm to staff and students.

"We recognize the serious nature of today’s incident and we will have additional police presence and Student Services staff at Preble tomorrow for students who wish to talk about the events of today. In addition, we remind our staff that EAP services are available to them."
