Borel Fire forcing evacuations: 'We hope we can escape without any loss of life'

According to the Sequoia National Forest, as of Monday, July 29, 2024, the Borel Fire has burned 53,013 acres with 0% containment.

The fire began on July 24, 2024, at around 12:52 p.m., after a solo-vehicle crash. The vehicle involved, identified as a 1993 Chevy, caught on fire. The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened on Highway 178, west of Democrat Road. The 46-year-old man lost control of the vehicle and overturned down the embankment. The man died.
