What if our work lives were all about helping good teams become great teams, instead of rescuing struggling teams from distress and looming failure? It turns out there is a science to the features of teams that reliably set them on a path to excellence…and a lot of art to getting those features in place.

In this session, organizational scholar Ruth Wageman will share the science behind the typical tripwires that undermine team effectiveness. She will introduce the 6 Conditions that she and her colleagues at Harvard have found will prevent those tripwires and stack the deck in favor of superb teamwork. And she will explore with participants the artful practices that leaders, team members, and team development practitioners can enact to design a team for success.

Ruth Wageman, Ph. D
Ruth Wageman is one of the foremost scholars studying and working with teams, especially leadership teams. She believes that all our greatest aspirations and all our most wicked problems will only be addressed through brilliant collaboration. Ruth’s research, teaching, and practice focus on the designable features of teams that collectively result in superb performance.

Ruth studies and mentors leadership teams whose purpose is to solve complex problems and to lead system transformation. She has been a professor at Columbia, Dartmouth, and Harvard, where she has led many original research programs.

Ruth wrote “Senior Leadership Teams: What it Takes to Make them Great,” (HBS Press) with Deb Nunes, Jim Burruss, and Richard Hackman, and has published many widely-cited scholarly articles in her field. She designed the Team Diagnostic Survey (TDS™) with Richard Hackman and Erin Lehman. TDS™ is the only rigorously validated and peer-reviewed assessment of team effectiveness on the market today.

Ruth leads certification workshops in using the TDS™ and she teaches master team practitioners how to bring the 6 Conditions to their practice to foster brilliant collaboration.
