Pingali Venkayya, the man who designed the national flag of India, was born on August 2, 1878. He was not just the creator of this historic symbol that speaks to our nationalistic emotions; throughout his life, he also worked as a teacher, author, agriculturist, and linguist. Growing up in rural Andhra Pradesh, Venkayya was drawn to the armed forces. At the age of 19, he joined the British Indian Army and participated in the Boer War in South Africa, where he met Gandhi. Watching soldiers salute the Union Jack during the war made Venkayya realise that his motherland had no such symbol with which its people could identify their country. This realisation sparked the idea to design a flag for Indians and India. He made over 25 drafts of flag designs, each attached with specific significance to India's rich culture and history. Finally, when Gandhi asked Venkayya to submit a design for the flag at the AICC session held in Bezwada, he designed one on Khadi bunting within three hours.
The draft presented to Gandhi had two color bands: red and green, symbolising the two major communities in India - Hindus and Muslims. However, Gandhi suggested adding a white band to represent peace and harmony between the communities.
On August 15, 1947, when India gained its independence, the tricolor became the national flag, with minor changes: saffron replaced the red, and a 24-spoked navy blue Ashoka Chakra replaced the spinning wheel in the center.
The flag Venkayya designed is one of the iconic symbols used to identify the country, yet the man behind it all chose to remain in the shadows, working for the nation. Venkayya died in 1963, and at the time, he was said to be penniless and mired in poverty. The only thing he left behind was a humble hut in Chittinagar, built on the land awarded to him for his army service.
