Voting in the first phase of India’s general election took place in 102 constituencies across 21 states as Prime Minister Modi seeks a third term. The seven-phase election involves nearly a billion eligible voters in the largest democratic exercise in the world. India’s Election Commission said there was nearly a 60 percent turnout in the first phase of the election as of 5pm. The next phase of the vote will be held on April 26 with 89 parliamentary seats up for grabs across 13 states. Voting will end on June 1 and the results will be declared on June 4.
