Bio

Born in 1982 Raven Skyriver started blowing glass in high school at the age of sixteen. Raven’s mentor Lark Dalton taught him how to build glass blowing equipment, and trained him in traditional Venetian techniques. In 2003 Raven was invited to join the William Morris team. He worked on the team until Bill’s retirement, in 2007. The experience of working with such a talented group of artists galvanized his decision to follow Glass sculpting as a profession.

Raven lives near Pilchuck School in Stanwood Wa., and produces his work in the greater Seattle area. Raven shows his work nationally and has been featured in group shows internationally. His focus in the area of sculpture, and the depiction of marine life is inspired by his island upbringing, and informed by the creatures that inhabit this fragile ecosystem.

“Growing up in the pacific northwest on a small island translated into ample time on and around the water. Some of my most memorable moments in life are those of having my first salmon on the line, or a humpback whale feeding off the bow of my kayak. These unforgettable experiences dictate the work I make today.

I attempt to capture the essence of the animals that I depict, and speak to the viewers own understanding of these creatures. I also hope to draw into question the delicate balance of nature that is, often taken for granted.” ~ Raven Skyriver

It is upon the basis of science from which we extract solutions. Facts and reports can be mind-dulling on paper, disengaging, impersonal. I aim to emulate in Art the things I learn from Science. This allows me to share what I learn, and to chronicle in a visually compelling way, which may be somehow useful now or in the future. My current project, “Critical Masse,” consists of a large grouping of critically endangered animals in white and clear glass. A glance into our possible future, these animals are meant to be understood as “ghosts” of our world.”
