Hi! Welcome back to our classroom. My name is Ms. Cora, and I am so happy you are joining me today. In today’s lesson, we learn about the 12 Months of the Year: January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. First, we begin by practicing pronouncing each month together. During this time, I mention any different pronunciation variations that I am familiar with hearing while also relaying the pronunciation I typically tend to use. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see each month written out. Underneath, you’ll find each month’s common abbreviation(s) and pronunciation variations. I have written out each variation based on how it sounds and have included some familiar IPA symbols we have learned about in previous lessons together. (Please note, I believe it is important to mention the differences one may encounter with regional accents and dialects when it comes to pronunciation practice.) Following, we practice clapping out the syllables for each month to help us hear the different sounds, or parts, or each word. Syllable Awareness is an important skill under the Phonological Awareness Umbrella. Words can be broken down into syllables, and those syllables can be counted, blended, and manipulated. Overall, Syllable Awareness is an important phonological skill that positively contributes to reading and spelling success. Finally, we review the Months of the Year by singing a simple song that you can use to support memorization! Research shows that there is a correlation between music and memory.
