VI. Long Answer Questions.

1. Compare the geographical conditions required for the cultivation of rice and wheat.
Ans - (a) Pittsburgh is an important steel city of the United States of America.
(b) In mid 19th century processing of Iron began in Pittsburgh.
(c) Some of the raw material such as coal is available locally, while the iron ore comes from the iron mines at Minnesota, about 1500 km from Pittsburgh. Between these mines and Pittsburgh is one of the world's best routes for shipping ore cheaply - the famous Great Lakes to the Pittsburgh area.
(d) The Ohio, the Monongahela and Allegheny rivers provide adequate water supply.
2. Explain the geographical conditions required for the cultivation of cotton and millet.
Ans - Following are the locational advantages for the development of cotton textile industry in Ahmedabad:
(a) Located in Gujarat on the banks of the Sabarmati River.
(b) Situated very close to cotton growing area. Raw material is easy availability.
(c) The climate is ideal for spinning and weaving.
(d) The flat terrain and easy availability of land is suitable for the establishment of the mills.
(e) The densely populated states of Gujarat and Maharashtra provide both skilled and semi-skilled labour.
(f) Well developed road and railway network permits easy transportation of textiles to different parts of the country, thus providing easy access to the market.
(g) Mumbai and Kandla ports nearby facilitates import of machinery and export of cotton textiles.
3. Compare and contrast the farming practices in India and the USA.
Ans - On the basis of raw material used, industries are classified into followings:
(i)Agro based industries: It uses plant and animal based products as their raw materials. Food processing, vegetable oil, cotton textile, dairy.
(ii)Mineral based industries: These are primary industries feed other industries. Iron made from iron ore is the product of mineral based industry.
(iii) Marine based industries: It uses products from the seas and oceans as raw materials. Industries processing sea food or manufacturing fish oil are some examples.
(iv)Forest based industries: This utilise forest produce as raw materials. The industries associated with forests are pulp and paper, pharmaceuticals, furniture and buildings.
4. How has the Green Revolution changed agriculture in India?
Ans - The similarities between information technology industry in Bangalore and California are as follows:
i) Availability of skilled man power.
ii) Pleasant climate and clean environment.
iii) Well-developed and well-connected industries.
iv) Connected to marked properly
5. Write a short note on commercial farming.
Ans - Commercial farming is closely integrated with global supply chains, meaning the products are usually sold in national and international markets rather than consumed locally.
Common types of commercial farming include dairy farming, grain farming, livestock ranching, poultry farming, horticulture, and aquaculture.
6. What are the different types of economic activities? Explain.
Ans - Economic activities refer to all actions that involve producing, distributing, or consuming goods and services for the purpose of earning a livelihood.
Primary Activities involve the extraction and utilization of natural resources directly from the environment. Examples include agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining, and quarrying.
Secondary activities involve transforming raw materials into finished or semi-finished products through industrial processes such as manufacturing, construction, and processing.
Tertiary activities focus on providing services rather than producing goods. This includes trade, transport, banking, healthcare, education, and communication.
