Pakistan’s textile sector is on the brink of collapse, with over 144 textile mills shutting down due to exorbitant taxes, high electricity costs, and gas shortages. This alarming development threatens the country’s economic backbone and jeopardizes thousands of jobs.

According to APTMA Chairman Kamran Arshad, the rising operational costs are pushing local and multinational textile companies out of Pakistan. Only a few mills are operating, and even they are struggling to stay afloat.

The Pakistan Textile Council has reported a sharp decline in exports, with the first quarter showing a 3.83% drop, totaling $7.61 billion, and September alone seeing a 11.71% decrease ($2.51 billion). Major companies like Gul Ahmed Textile, Procter & Gamble, Microsoft, and Shell are limiting operations or exiting Pakistan due to energy costs, taxes, and policy uncertainty.

Experts warn that without immediate government reforms, more industries could close, further damaging exports, foreign investment, and employment in Pakistan.
