If you're suspicious that any parts on the car look like they’ve been repaired or touched up with body filler, you can test that theory with your fridge magnet.

Obviously the magnet will only magnetise the the metal panels, not the body filler.

Be aware that on newer cars there are lots of plastic and aluminium parts where the magnet won’t stick anyways.

As for the water bottle, we can use this to gauge the severity of scratches in the panel.

If its just a light clear coat scratch like this one, it’ll disappear when the water is applied (hence why you never want to inspect a wet car). This can be easily fixed with some simple buffing or light sanding.

If they don’t disappear, you know the scratch is deeper into the paint, meaning it will need sanding and possibly even a bit of paint work, as well as clear coat. So a bigger job.
